Taking Karazhan

by WOTLK Guide on January 2, 2011

The ghosts haunting an ancient battleground await the warrior who is strong enough to silence them into their eternal rest. The battle took place in a soaring tower where the legendary Medivh was defeated by the army of Stormwind, after which his tower was sealed away from the rest of the world until recently. Now it has reopened, and warriors from across the land converge to challenge the ghosts in this ancient place and claim its spoils.

The Fun of Karazhan

Karazhan is a 10 or 25-man raid that came with the Burning Crusade expansion of World of Warcraft. It is a fairly large instance with a lot of “trash.” Trash is the common term for a bunch of baddies you have to kill before you get to a boss. While this is a fairly large instance, it’s located at the southern end of Deadwind Pass, which is one of the smaller areas in the entire game.

When the Burning Crusade expansion was added, it introduced a new continent for players to utilize, but strangely this raid is found in the original continents. As far as the raid itself, it’s generally considered a beginner raid for people just having reached level 70. Since it is a level 70 raid, it may be more difficult to find a group of 70’s to run it with as many Burning Crusade raids became obsolete with the latest expansion- The Wrath of the Lich King.

Karazhan is a very intriguing instance overall. It appears as a sort of rundown castle complete with stables, dining room, library, museum, bordello and even a theater. All of these unique areas come with their own bosses who of course compliment the situations: Horse boss in the stables, food fight in the dining room, Wizard of Oz basically acted out in the theater, a giant Maiden of Virtue in the bordello, and a living exhibit in the museum.

This is a very fun instance that takes a little bit of skill to troubleshoot, but players that have joined since around January 2009 may never have had the chance to experience this as it was intended. You can put together a run, but chances are a couple 80’s will be along just for fun and all the difficulty and satisfaction of overcoming difficult fights will be lost.

If you have a chance to run this as a 70 with other 70’s, take it. If you have never run it and decide to as a level 80, that’s fine too, because the experiences alone are worth your time. Karazhan was the raiding standard for quite some time and long-time players will always look back at it with fondness.
